Dr. Renée Akbar is an associate professor at Xavier University of Louisiana, where she also serves as Chair of the Division of Education and Counseling. Before coming to Xavier, Dr. Akbar served as a program coordinator for SERVE, one of ten federally-funded educational laboratories, in which she helped to improve elementary mathematics and science pedagogical content knowledge of teachers and administrators. Prior to SERVE, Dr. Akbar was as an elementary teacher and assistant principal in Tallahassee, Florida, where she attended and graduated from Florida A & M University and Florida State University. Her research agenda is focused on the sociopolitical environment of closing the achievement gap - via education reform and teacher quality, and poverty’s impact on teaching and learning.
